The manufacture of humanoid robots with embedded artificial intelligence and for sexual purposes has generated some debates within bioethics, in which diverse competing views have been presented. Themes such as sexuality and its deviations, the objectification of women, the relational problems of contemporary life, loneliness, and even the reproductive future of the species constitute the arguments which have emerged in relation to this subject. Based on these themes, this article presents the current state of the use of female sex robots, (...) the bioethical problems that arise, and how bioethics could serve as a medium for both thinking about and resolving some of these challenges. The aim of this study was to test red - green dichromats' ability to discriminate between illuminant and surface-reflectance changes in natural scenes. Stimuli were simulations of natural scenes presented on a colour monitor with 10-bit resolution per gun. The natural scenes were obtained with a fast hyperspectral imaging system. Six different scenes (including rocks, foliage, and buildings) were tested. In each trial, two images were presented in sequence, each for 1 s, with no interval. The images differed in the (...) phase of daylight on the scene: first with correlated colour temperature 25 000 K, then 6 700 K. The spectral reflectance of a region in the second image was changed randomly, consistent with a local change in daylight. The observer's task was to decide whether a particular surface in the successive images was the same (pure illuminant change) or different (illuminant change with a surface-reflectance change). The performance of four deuteranopes and five protanopes varied considerably across the scenes tested, with mean colour constancy indices (± 1 SEM) of 0.48 (± 0.13) and 0.19 (± 0.10), respectively (1.0 representing ideal performance). Deuteranopes seemed less disadvantaged than protanopes, performing close to normal with some scenes. (shrink)

The number of discriminable colours is often assumed to be of the order of several million but the extent of detectable chromatic diversity present in individual natural scenes is an open question. Here, the aim was to estimate the number of discriminable colours seen in natural scenes. Hyperspectral data were obtained from a set of natural scenes over the range 400 - 720 nm at 10 nm intervals (Nascimento et al, 2002 Journal of the Optical Society of America A (...) 19 1484 - 1490) and the representation of each scene in CIELAB space computed for all pixels of the image. The number of discriminable colours was estimated by counting the number of unit volumes in the three-dimensional volume defined by the scene when represented in CIELAB space. We found that the number of discriminable colours estimated in a scene could vary by an order of magnitude from scene to scene, but rarely exceeded 105, indicating a limited chromatic diversity. Este artigo resgata uma dessas recriações, como uma doce lembrança que apazigua os corações: a versão de Eurípides, encenada em 412 a.C. A sedutora, mas traidora Helena passa a ser um ardil divino, pois a verdadeira Helena é virtuosa e não está em Tróia, mas no Egito, esperando que o desígno dos deuses se cumpra, que Tróia seja destruída e (...) que, finalmente, Menelau a leve de volta ao lar. A Helena de Troia, portanto, não passa de um eídolon; reler Helena de Eurípides é uma oportunidade de se repensar o lugar dessa personagem na história e na literatura. Essa é a nossa proposta. Queen pheromones, which signal the presence of a fertile queen and induce daughter workers to remain sterile, are considered to play a key role in regulating the reproductive division of labor of insect societies. Although queen pheromones were long thought to be highly taxon‐specific, recent studies have shown that structurally related long‐chain hydrocarbons act as conserved queen signals across several independently evolved lineages of social insects. These results imply that social insect queen pheromones are very ancient and likely derived from (...) an ancestral signalling system that was already present in their common solitary ancestors. Based on these new insights, we here review the literature and speculate on what signal precursors social insect queen pheromones may have evolved from. Furthermore, we provide compelling evidence that these pheromones should best be seen as honest signals of fertility as opposed to suppressive agents that chemically sterilize the workers against their own best interests. Neste artigo pretender-se-á estabelecer as bases sobre as quais Martín de Azpilcueta demonstra sua fundamentação da autoridade política no intuito de refletir sobre como este pensador articula sua argumentação no intuito de apresentar o povo como detentor originário, por direito natural, do poder civil. Para que este objetivo possa ser alcançado buscar-se-á apresentar como o autor relaciona e distingue o poder eclesiástico do poder laico ou civil. Em seguida demonstrar-se-á como o pensador espanhol estabelece sua fundamentação da autoridade civil popular (...) ao defender que o poder civil se legitima por ter sua origem em Deus, por ser de ordem natural e ser dado de forma imediata à comunidade dos mortais. A partir disso é possível considerar que a autoridade política laica, conforme o pensamento de Martín de Azpilcueta, tem o povo como seu legítimo depositário e que disso decorre a igualdade original primária de todos os homens na vida pública. Para que se possa realizar o objetivo apresentado neste trabalho estudar-se-á, de maneira específica, a Notabile tertium presente na obra Martín de Azpilcueta chamada Relectio C. Novit de Iudiciis publicada pela primeira vez em Coimbra no ano de 1548. (shrink)

Muitos filósofos utilizaram o jornalismo como meio para expressar suas ideias. Depois da Segunda Guerra Mundial, por exemplo, Sartre, Adorno, Arendt, publicaram em jornais ou concederam entrevistas problematizando aquele evento: seus motivos, consequências e, sobretudo, as formas de evitar outras catástrofes. A partir de 1960, na França, Michel Foucault teve intensificada sua relação com jornais e jornalistas: concedeu entrevistas; participou de debates; publicou informativos e respostas a críticos; e, inclusive, atuou na criação do jornal Libération, em 1972. Quanto aos escritos (...) do autor, conforme Deleuze (1991), as entrevistas de Foucault devem ser consideradas parte da obra do filósofo, destacando a importância do jornalismo para o pensamento do autor: várias delas foram compiladas e publicadas enquanto “formas de expressão” em livros como “Microfísica do Poder” (1977) e na Coleção “Ditos e Escritos” (1994), sendo decisivas para o conjunto da obra foucaultiana. Em sua perspectiva, Filosofia e jornalismo manifestam interesses semelhantes pela “atualidade”, entrecruzando suas práticas, motivo pelo qual se tornou importante dar a necessária atenção ao tema em seus escritos. Assim, este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a relação entre Foucault e o jornalismo de modo a responder como tal relação tem importância para o desenvolvimento e compreensão da filosofia foucaultiana. After the Second World War Sartre, Adorno, Arendt published in newspapers or gave interviews about that event: the reasons, the consequences and how to avoid catastrophes. In France since 1960 Michel Foucault increased his relationship with newspapers and journalists: he was interviewed, participated in debates, published newsletters, responded to comments and worked on the project to create the newspaper Libération, in 1972. Considering the texts published in newspapers, Deleuze (1991) said that Foucault’s interviews should be read as part of Foucault’s work. This decision is important to think about the contribution of journalism to Foucault and to his political interventions. Several of these interventions were published as “forms of expression” in the books: “Microfisica del Potere” (Italy, 1977) and in the Collection “Dits et Écrits” (France, 1994) and they were decisive for Foucault’s work. For the author Philosophy and Journalism have similar interests in the present reality: they intertwine their practices and this is a reason to pay attention to this relationship in Foucault’s books. Thus, the present article aims to analyze the relationship between Foucault and journalism and then discuss how this relationship helps in the understanding of Foucault’s philosophy. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, par exemple, Sartre, Adorno, Arendt ont écrit des journaux ou donné des entretetiens sur cet événement: les raisons, les conséquences et surtout les moyens d’éviter d’autres conflits. En France, depuis 1960, Michel Foucault multiplie les relations avec les journaux: il donne des entretiens, participe à des débats, publie des bulletins, répond aux critiques et participe à la création du journal Libération. En ce sens, Deleuze (1991) a déclaré que ces entretiens doivent être lus dans le cadre de l’œuvre foucaldienne, soulignant l’importance du journalisme pour la pensée de l’auteur. Plusieurs de ces entretiens ont été compilés et publiés comme “formes d’expression” dans des ouvrages tels que “Microfisica del Potere” (Italie, 1977) et “Dits et Écrits” (1994) et ont été importantes pour l’œuvre foucaldienne. Pour Foucault, la philosophie et le journalisme montrent des intérêts similaires pour l’actualité, ils mêlent leurs pratiques, et c’est pourquoi il est important de prêter attention au thème. Ainsi, cet article vise à analyser la relation entre Foucault et le journalisme et tenter de montrer comment cette relation est importante dans le développement et la compréhension de la philosophie de Foucault. Lazare Carnot was the unique example in the history of science of someone who inadvertently owed the scientific recognition he eventually achieved to earlier political prominence. He and his son Sadi produced work that derived from their training as engineers and went largely unnoticed by physicists for a generation or more, even though their respective work introduced concepts that proved fundamental when taken up later by other hands. There was, moreover, a filial as well as substantive relation between the work (...) of father and son. Sadi applied to the functioning of heat engines the analysis that his father had developed in his study of the operation of ordinary machines. Specifically, Sadi's idea of a reversible process originated in the use his father made of geometric motions in the analysis of machines in general. (shrink)

It is shown that the Maxwell-Lorentz equations can be deduced from the law of Biot-Savart by simply performing some theoretical experimentations.

Previous studies have found Forsyth’s Ethical Position Questionnaire (EPQ) to vary between countries, but none has made a systematic evaluation of its psychometric properties across consumers from many countries. Using confirmatory factor analysis and multi-group LISREL analysis, this paper explores the factor structure of the EPQ and the measurement equivalence in five societies: Austria, Britain, Brunei, Hong Kong and USA. The results suggest that the modified scale, measuring idealism and relativism, was applicable in all five societies. Equivalence was found across (...) This essay explores the treatment of the relation between nature (phusis) and norm or convention (nomos) in Democritus and in certain Platonic dialogues. In his physical theory Democritus draws a sharp contrast between the real nature of things and their representation via human conventions, but in his political and ethical theory he maintains that moral conventions are grounded in the reality of human nature. Plato builds on that insight in the account of the nature of morality in the myth in (...) the Protagoras. That provides material for a defense of morality against the attacks by Callicles in the Gorgias and Thrasymachus and Glaucon in the Republic, all of whom seek to use the nature-convention contrast to devalue morality. In this dialogue Plato shows the pretensions of the leading sophist, Protagoras, challenged by the critical arguments of Socrates. The dialogue broadens out to consider the nature of the good life and the role of intellect and pleasure.
